Elementary Religious Education Program

Hello . . . and welcome to St. Stephen’s Elementary Religious Education Program. It is our belief that faith formation and learning about our unique Catholic Christian identity do not occur only in the classroom setting. Catholic Christian identity is essential to the formation of an active and practicing Catholic. It begins and is best nurtured within each family in their home.

About our Program

It is our belief that You, the Parents, are the first and foremost educators of the faith for your children. Our Program is dedicated to supplement what you are already teaching them at home.

We offer ongoing faith formation classes for children in first through eighth grades. Our year begins early in September and runs through Mid-May. Classes are held on Saturdays, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, in the School classrooms.

Sacrament Preparation

We are a three year preparation program which means that your child would attend classes for three years before receiving their sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. This applies also to children in the R.C.I.A. Program.

Unbaptized Children

We welcome any children who are 6 years of age and older and who have not been baptized.

Because they have reached “the age of reason” the Church says that these children must be

fully instructed to receive the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation & First

Eucharist). This will take place in the third year of their preparation.

About our Staff

We are blessed to have a wonderful staff of volunteers who enjoy sharing their faith and working with children. We are as varied as high school and college students, to secretaries and mothers, to grandmothers and grandfathers. All have much experience working with children and have attended the Faith Formation Classes for certification.

(from our Mission Statement) “We lovingly commit ourselves to serve the children. We will strive to promote an awareness of God’s love for them, that it may help them to love themselves and others.”

(From the Parent Handbook) “As Catechists we believe we are called to love those we teach -as Jesus loves us. We are invited to get to know them and to accept them as they are - as God loves and accepts us. We, therefore, pledge this love to our students and their families.”
